Before Your Visit

Pre-Care Instructions

  • Avoid sun exposure (apply sunscreen daily and do not tan at all – including self-tanner) for 2 to 4 weeks before and after treatments.
  • Do not use any retinol products (or products containing tretinoin) or exfoliants on the area to be treated for one week.
  • Avoid Accutane (or isotretinoin products) for 6 months prior. Let your doctor know if you have a history of hyperpigmentation.
  • If you have a history of fever blisters/cold sores, notify your provider. (We can write you a prescription for a prophylactic antiviral therapy to start prior to the treatment to prevent a flare up of cold sores.) If you have a current prescription, Valtrex 500mg should be taken by mouth twice daily on the day before, the day of, and the day after your treatment.
  • Notify the provider if you have had any cosmetic tattooing on or near the area to be treated.
  • Photosensitizing medications including doxycycline and minocycline should be discontinued three days prior to the treatment.

On the day of your appointment:

  • Come to your appointment with a clean face- remove all makeup if the area to be treated is the face. If applicable, dress so that you may modestly expose the treatment area.

After Your Treatment

Aftercare Instructions

  • You may have a mild sunburn (burning) sensation following the treatment that is usually gone within a few hours.
  • Skin redness is normal and may last a few days. There may be a slight amount of swelling. ▪ Pigmented areas may begin to flake after a few days.
  • Cold compresses may be useful for the first 24 hours. Your skin will be fragile for 2-3 days. ▪ Use gentle cleansers, do not rub the skin and avoid hot water during this time. Do not use your Clarisonic or a loofah for one week. Do not use any retinoids, tretinoins, alpha or beta hydroxy products, vitamin C products, scrub, exfoliate, or have chemical peels performed on the areas treated area for one week.
  • Makeup can be applied immediately (if the skin is not broken).
  • It is very important to avoid the sun and use sun block for 2 to 4 weeks following your treatment.
  • Avoid excessive heat or friction to the treated area (heavy exercise, saunas).
  • Sun spots and age spots will DARKEN with the IPL treatments BEFORE they begin to respond and resolve. This is expected and a normal part of the IPL process.
  • Do not pick these spots once they become dry. They will lift and fall off on their own.

Have Questions?

We've compiled answers to the most common questions to help you make informed decisions about your beauty journey.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

You will see improvement in skin tone and appearance in as little as one IPL photofacial treatment session, however, most patients undergo a minimum of three treatments with our Lumecca IPL for best results. The IPL photofacial treatment is determined based on the severity of skin damage, skin type and treatment results desired.

Does IPL Photofacial Hurt?

During your Lumecca IPL treatment, there will be a bright flash of light from the device which produces a sensation similar to that of a light rubber band snap. Redness and warming of the skin are normal after treatment, and usually subside within an hour. Most patients find the treatment to be tolerable. We do offer Pro-Nox, if needed. See Pro-Nox page for all the details.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate?

Anyone with vascular lesions, port wine stains, facial, truncal and leg telangiectasias, rosacea, erythema of rosacea, hemangiomas, angiomas and spider angiomas, poikilodenna of Civatte, superficial leg veins, hyperpigmentation, and freckles.  Lumecca IPL is cleared for use on skin types I - IV.

How Much Does IPL Cost?

Lumecca IPL Photofacial requires a consultation appointment to determine treatment plan and pricing.

Consultations at Beyond Esthetics are complimentary.

What Is The Downtime?

There is no downtime with Lumecca IPL. After treatment, redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal. These usually subside within an hour or two. Over the next 24-48 hours you may see a darkening of pigmented spots; in the week afterwards the pigmented lesions flake off, leading to brighter, more flawless skin.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Thanks to the innovative technology from Lumecca, you can achieve results in as few as one session. Lumecca utilizes a broader range of wavelengths to improve the effectiveness of treatments and speed up the healthy regeneration of new skin cells. You will notice your spots getting darker the first 48 hours and within 7-10 days the spots will fall off. PRO TIP: schedule a dermaplane facial around Day 10 post treatment.

What Skin Types Can Be Treated?

In darker skin types, traditional IPL is often not recommended. The reason is that the darker the pigment, the harder it is for a conventional laser to target and break them down. However, if you have light or dark skin, you can rely on Lumecca’s advanced technology. It has a wide range of wavelengths suitable for treating various skin areas and skin conditions. Lumecca IPL is cleared for use on skin types I - IV.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Lumecca IPL can be used on all areas of the body. The most commonly treated areas are those regularly exposed to the sun such as the face, décolletage, hands, neck, legs and arms.
